The problem, often not discovered until late in life, is that when you look for things in life like love, meaning, motivation, it implies they are sitting behind a tree or under a rock. The most successful people in life recognize, that in life they create their own love, they manufacture their own meaning, they generate their own motivation. For me, I am driven by two main philosophies, know more today about the world than I knew yesterday. And lessen the suffering of others. You’d be surprised how far that gets you.
-Neil Degrasse Tyson
You will build a body of work, but you will also build a body of affection, with the people you’ve helped who’ve helped you back. This is the era of Friends in Low Places. The ones you meet now, who will notice you, challenge you, work with you, and watch your back. Maybe they will be your strength…If you can… fall in love, with the work, with people you work with, with your dreams and their dreams. Whatever it was that got you to where you are, don’t let it go. Whatever kept you here, don’t let that go. Believe in your friends. Believe that what you and your friends have to say… that the way you’re saying it — is something new in the world.

Words on a graduation commencement speech
Why read books?
In this fast paced world that can’t seem to stop moving, slowing down and sitting down to read might be just what we need. Books can teach us about this world and transport us into other ones. Books give us insight. Books broaden our horizons, stretching out our minds and feeding our brains. With books we can educate ourselves. They help us to better our writing, our vocabulary and our though process. Books help to liberate us from mental slavery and free our minds. Books are freedom, books are growth, books are fun, books are creativity, books are awesome. Find something that interests you, pick up a book on it and read.
“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”
-Carl Sagan

Zen pencil to the words of Malala Yousafzai who today was named joint winner of the Nobel Peace prize. Malala is a 15-year-old Pakistani girl who was shot in the head on the way home from school by the Taliban, who retaliated after she criticized the Taliban’s strict rules against female education. She was shot in the head for standing up for her right to go to school. Education is a fundamental human right, one which most of us take for granted. Education is the best tool humanity has to fight against the evils of ignorance, hatred, and prejudice and we should valued it tremendously. Thank you Malala for standing up for your rights and for inspiring others to do the same.
